Nonprofit 101: Basics of Nonprofit Sector

Want to learn more about the sector you work or volunteer in? Want to make a job change but don’t know how?

This introductory session will provide an overview of the nonprofit sector and the essential features that define it. Participants will learn about the origins of the sector, types of nonprofit organizations, and the role of nonprofits in society and the economy today. The session will also highlight some of the current trends and unique challenges impacting nonprofit organizations and those who work in them.

Topics Addressed: communication, fundraising, marketing, finance, program management, governance

Level: Introductory level course

Who should attend? 
  • Professionals new to the nonprofit field.
  • Professionals interested in transitioning to the nonprofit sector.
  • CNM Members working toward a Nonprofit Essentials certificate.
Method of Facilitation: interactive lecture, group discussion, group activities

  • Gain knowledge about the history and scope of the nonprofit sector.
  • Identify key research trends impacting nonprofit organizations today.
  • Describe the distinctions and similarities between the nonprofit and for-profit sectors
