Nonprofit Accounting: A Focus on Internal Controls

Do you know what policies and procedures are necessary for your nonprofit to achieve its objectives relating to operations, reporting, and compliance?

Understanding nonprofit accounting and internal controls are integral to making sure your nonprofit is operating both legally and effectively. Ensuring the reliability of accounting data through a basic internal control system is necessary for the sustainability of your organization. In this workshop, you will learn the different systems you can implement for accurate accounting practices. Participants will explore the popular accounting software tools and learn how to use them for their organization.

Topics Addressed: accounting, finance management, risk mitigation, internal controls

Level: Intermediate (not recommended for nonprofit beginners). No prerequisites required. No preparation needed. 7.2 hours of CPE Credits.

Who should attend?

  • Nonprofit executives, program managers, financial managers, bookkeepers, professionals interacting with finances in their workplace.
  • Board members who work with the executive committee or treasurer.

Method of Facilitation: modeling of computer systems, lecture, interactive discussion, group work

This work will amplify the impact of nonprofits by helping participants:

  • Understand how to update and document key financial policies and procedures for their organization.
  • Develop and document the organization’s internal control framework in compliance with COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission).
  • Identify and document controls for key financial transaction areas within their organization.
