Stewart Clifton, Clifton Government Relations
Stewart Clifton is an attorney and government relations specialist who specializes in representing Tennessee nonprofits at the state level. His currently works with the following groups:
Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Center for Nonprofit Management, League of Women Voters of Tennessee, National Association of Social Workers – Tennessee Chapter, Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services, Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children, Tennessee Association of Pastoral Therapists, Tennessee Conservation Voters, YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee
A native Memphian, Stewart has lived in Nashville since 1969. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Law School. He has been a member of the Tennessee Bar since 1977. Before his current work on behalf of a wide range of nonprofit groups he worked for over 30 years as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society and as staff attorney and then executive director of the TN Alliance for Legal Services.
Stewart has also recently been appointed as an instructor with the Nelson and Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership of Lipscomb University.
His current volunteer work includes serving as a board member of Tennessee Sycamore Institute, trustee of the Baptist Healing Trust and board member of United Ways of Tennessee. He is also a member and past chair of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Government Affairs Committee.
Stewart also regularly volunteers to speak to groups about how to effectively engage in public policy advocacy at the state and local level.
He served from 1987-1999 as the Metro Councilmember for District 18 and since 2000 has served as a Metro Planning Commissioner.
