Sybril Bennett Ph.D., Executive Director/ Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies, Belmont University
Dr. Sybril Bennett is a Vanderbilt educated, Harvard trained, two-time Emmy award winning multimedia journalist. She is currently an Associate Professor at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee where she helped to establish the New Century Journalism Program. As the inaugural Executive Director, Dr. Syb (as she is affectionately known) played an integral role in curriculum development, fundraising, advisory board management, recruitment, speaker's series development, summer high school journalism camp establishment, conference coordination, partnership development, internship facilitation, teaching and more. Further, her responsibilities included learning all she could about new media convergence. As a result, she has attended training seminars through the Poynter Institute, the American Press Institute, the Ifra Newsplex, the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, the National Association of Black Journalists and many conference sessions at annual conventions for organizations like the Online News Association. She is a sought after speaker, facilitator, workshop coordinator and multimedia strategist. She coaches individuals and organizations on implementing multimedia strategies using traditional as well as social media.
Dr. Syb has twenty years of professional experience in the media. Prior to her appointment at Belmont, Dr. Syb was a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor and talk show host at the CBS affiliate in Nashville. She was also an associate producer, news writer and weekend assignment editor at that station. In Chicago, she was a desk assistant at the CBS affiliate and her career began as a news trainee and eventually an associate producer and weekend assignment editor at the ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Dr. Syb has taught at several institutions including Volunteer State Community College, Tennessee State University and Middle Tennessee State University. She has also served as a Senior Public Affairs Officer and Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Media Relations at Vanderbilt University. She has also managed her own booking agency.
As if that isn't enough, Dr. Syb is an author and a publisher. The Color-Full Alphabet book is a Dr. Seuss like children's book dedicated to the 44th President of the United States, Mr. Barack Obama. Each letter stands for a positive word. "A" is for amazing. "B" is for believe. "C" is for change. "O" is for Obama. "P" is for President. The book includes a portrait of the President. Dr. Syb earned her Ph. D. in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University; a M.Ed. in College Student Personnel from Loyola University of Chicago; and, a B.A. in Broadcast and Electronic Communication from Marquette University in Milwaukee. In addition, Dr. Syb completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University and the Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Training Program at Louisiana State University.
